29 July 2005
Germany's Fichtnerhas been selected by Qatar General Water & Electricity Corporation (Kahramaa) to provide technical consultancy services for the state's next independent water and power project (IWPP), known as facility B. The IWPP is expected to represent the first element in a major new power and desalination complex at Mesaieed. The second element will serve the utility requirements of the proposed Qatalum aluminium project, which is being promoted by a joint venture of Qatar Petroleumand Norway's Hydro(MEED 22:4:05).

Facility B is expected to have capacity of about 1,200 MW plus some desalination and is scheduled for commissioning by April 2008. One of Fichtner's first tasks will be to draw up the request for proposal (RFP) documents, which are due to be completed by year-end. The Qatalum plant, which will be handled separately by the project developer, is expected to be of similar size and be commissioned in 2009. Bids are under evaluation from banks for the financial advisory mandate.

Fichtner's contract with Kahramaa will include several options, including masterplanning future utility requirements and acting as Kahramaa's adviser for the proposed Ras Abu Fontas B2 project, which is being handled by Qatar Electricity & Water Company (QEWC). B2 calls for the installation of 500 MW and 20 million gallons a day of capacity (MEED 17:6:05).
