Baraka nuclear plant in Abu Dhabi will have a total capacity of 5.6GW

The Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (Enec) has completed the installation of the condenser for unit 4 on its 5.6GW nuclear power project in Abu Dhabi.

The condenser is used in a nuclear power plant to cool the steam, produced to turn the turbines, back into water.

According to Enec, work on unit 4 of the Baraka nuclear plant is 38 per cent complete. The nuclear plant will consist of four units, each with a capacity of 1.4GW. Overall, about 76 per cent of the construction work on the plant has been completed.

The Baraka nuclear plant, the first nuclear power plant in the GCC, is due to be completed in 2020.

In July, 2016 Enec signed an operating support services agreement (OSSA) with the Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) for the Baraka nuclear power plant, which will be located in the western region of Abu Dhabi.

Under the agreement, KHNP will provide experienced nuclear power plant personnel to the Barakah nuclear power plant to support Enec’s operating subsidiary company, Nawah Energy Company (Nawah).

In October 2016, MEED reported that Enec and Korea Electric Power Corporation (Kepco) reached a financial close on $24.4bn a project finance deal on 20 October.

Kepco has taken an 18 per cent stake in a new joint venture, Barakah One. Enec and Kepco provided $4.7bn of equity.

Korea Electric Power Corporation (Kepco) won the contract to develop the plant in 2009. The engineering procurement and construction (EPC) contracts for each reactor were awarded to four companies: South Korea’s Hyundai Engineering & Construction, Samsung C&T, Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction and the US’ Westinghouse.
