Solar plant is being developed by local and Japanese consortium

Finland’s Wartsila has been awarded an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract to build a 52MW photovoltaic (PV) solar plant by a joint venture of the local AES Jordan and Japan’s Mitsui, which is developing the plant under the independent power producer (IPP) model.

The 52MW solar plant will be developed near the existing 250MW IPP4, which was commissioned in 2014 and was built by Wartsila.

Construction work on the 52MW solar IPP is due to start in June 2018,with commercial operation of the plant expected to begin in July 2019. Jordan’s National Electric Power Company (Nepco) will be the offtaker for produced power from the solar plant.

Jordan is pushing ahead with an ambitious programme of solar projects to reduce reliance on fuel imports, with the country currently importing more than 95 per cent of fuel used for power generation.

MEED reported in March that Saudi Arabia’s Acwa Power had signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) with Nepco to develop a 61.3MW photovoltaic (PV) solar plant at Risha.
