First Iraqi civil society group meeting held in Washington

26 February 2003
The first meeting of the civil society capacity building working group, organised as part of the Department of State's Future of Iraq initiative, was held in Washington DC on 24-25 February to review policy options for a post-crisis government in Baghdad.

'I think the meeting went very productively,' says Maha al-Shibib Joudi, a US-based Iraqi exile and a member of the group. The meeting called for the rebuilding of Iraq along democratic principles and defined the basic elements of a bill of rights.

The working group is one of 17 set up since the initiative was launched in February 2002.
