Turkish police detained four suspected Islamic militants on 16 June on suspicion they were planning to bomb the forthcoming NATO summit in Istanbul.

The four are thought to be members of the Ansar al-Islam, a group linked al-Qaeda said a police official, who also confirmed that materials used to produce bombs were seized.

NATO leaders are due to meet in Istanbul on June 28 and 29 amid heightened security.

In May, police in the northwestern city of Bursa detained 16 people suspected of planning a bomb attack during the summit. Nine were charged with terrorism.
