Four international companies submitted bids by 11 April for the contract to operate Mina Salman and the new Khalifa bin Salman port under construction at Hidd. The bidders are: Denmark's Maersk; Hong Kong's Hutchison Port Holdings; the Philippines' International Container Terminal Services; and the UK's Mersey Docks & Harbour. On offer is a 25-year concession and the chosen firm will commit to invest BD 25 million ($65.9 million) over the course of the contract (MEED 25:1:05).
The submission came after nine international and regional firms responded in the third quarter of 2004 to requests for indicative bids (RIBs) issued by the Finance & National Economy Ministry. Advising on the selection process is a team comprising KPMG, Trowers & Hamlinsand Australia's Meyrick, a specialist ports consultancy. On completion of the work at Hidd, due in 2006, almost all the ageing Mina Salman facilities will be shifted to the new port.
