Four consultants compete for Jeddah port expansion

05 January 2007

Four international companies have submitted bids for the design and engineering consultancy contract on the new Jeddah Islamic Port container terminal, planned by Saudi Trade & Export Development Company (Tusdeer). The bidders are Malaysia's Engineering & Environmental Consultants, Halcrow and Maunsell, both of the UK, and a Dutch/Malaysian team of Royal Haskoning and Sepakat Setia Perunding. A contract award is due by the end of January.

Located next to Tusdeer's bonded and re-export zone, the container terminal will add 1.5 million-2 million 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs) to the existing capacity of about 2.7 million TEUs when it becomes operational at the end of 2009.

The container terminal will consist of two 410-metre-long berths equipped with twin-lift capability Super Post-Panamax container cranes. An approach channel and a turning basin will be dredged and reclamation works will be carried out for the wharf and terminal facilities. The contract for the dredging and reclamation works are scheduled to be awarded during the second quarter of 2007.

Tusdeer has a 40-year build-operate-transfer agreement with Saudi Ports Authority to reclaim, develop and operate nearly 1 million square metres of land in the port's first bonded and re-export zone (MEED 15:9:06).
