The four-strong consortium of Belgium's Dredging International, the US' Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Company, Royal Boskalis Westminsterof the Netherlands and Qatar Dredging Companyhas been selected for the dredging and reclamation package on the estimated $2,500 million New Doha International Airport development project. An official award is imminent.
The venture was the low bidder at QR 1,782 million ($489 million), some 3 per cent below the next lowest offer of QR 1,820 million ($495 million) submitted by Belgium's Jan de Nul. The contract covers: the dredging of about 60 million cubic metres of material to create a platform for the new airport; construction of a 14-kilometre armoured revetment to protect the platform; and the dredging of a short approach channel-turning basin and a new quay to handle aggregates and construction materials. In all, there will be a further 17-18 construction packages on the airport development. The next major package to go to tender will be for the passenger terminal foundations, for which prequalification is complete.
