Four architect firms have been shortlisted for the contract to design the Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar) headquarters at its planned carbon-neutral city development.
The firms are Foster & Partner, Murphy & Young and Atkins, all of the UK, and the US’ Smith & Gill. “We’ll announce the winner soon,” says Khaled Awad, director of property development unit at Masdar.
Groundbreaking on the zero carbon emmission city takes place on 9 February. The development will be able to house up to 50,000 residents, with non-GCC nationals able to own property on a leasehold basis, says Awad.
Prequalification for the main construction packages on the project will start soon. Potential packages cover the light rail line, a personal rapid transit system, residential and commercial buildings, infrastructure, sewerage and water treatment, and contracts for solar, wind and waste-to-energy power generation projects.
The US’ Louis Berger is managing the city’s design process. The US’ CH2M Hill is the overall programme manager.
