French build up Beirut Port

05 January 2007

France's CMA CGM has signed an agreement with Beirut Port Authority (BPA) to boost capacity at the port as it tries to turn itself into a transhipment hub.

Under the three-year deal, CMA aims to increase container capacity to 740,000 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs) from 600,000 TEUs.

The deal follows the signing of an agreement in early August between the BPA and Swiss-based Mediterranean Shipping Company, for the latter to start using the port for the first time.

The Israeli blockade on the port in July and August dramatically affected its revenues and plans to expand the container port and related facilities had to be postponed. Germany's Sellhorn Ingenieurgesellschaft had been selected in December 2005 to carry out a feasibility study and draw up a masterplan which had to be delayed, according to BPA manager Hassan Khraitem (MEED 2:12:05).
