French fund ancient cities

03 October 2003

The French Development Agency (AFD) in early September extended a $12 million loan for the preservation and development of the historic city centres of Baalbeck, Byblos, Saida, Tripoli and Tyre.

The loan is part of a $62 million programme to restore war damage to the centres and to protect them from uncontrolled urban development. The project is co-financed by the World Bank, which announced in April a $31.5 million loan (MEED 22:4:03). The government of Italy has provided $10 million and another $10 million has been raised from local public and private sector sources.
