Contract involves supplying 11 new substations by early 2011
France’s Areva has won a AED1.05bn ($286m) contract to supply substations to Dubai Electricity & Water Authority (Dewa).
The order is the largest ever for Areva’s transmission and distribution division in the UAE and is part of Dewa’s plans to overhaul its 132 kV electrical distribution network. The contract involves supplying and installing 11 high voltage gas-insulated substations across Dubai by early 2011.
A substation is used to increase the electrical voltage coming from the power plant so that it can be transported, or to decrease the voltage coming from the main power lines so that can be used by an end–user. Gas-insulated substations are often favoured by clients because of their small size, which reduced the space needed for the buildings.
