Fresh prices due for Abu Dhabi corniche extension

Abu Dhabi Municipality has retendered the first-phase contract to extend the corniche, following its decision to replace the original contractor - BM Engineering & Construction Company of Turkey. Fresh prices are due to be returned by 10 March.

Estimated to be worth AED 150 million-180 million ($41 million-49 million), the 15-18-month contract will cover a 200-metre extension, 6.5 million cubic metres of dredging and about two kilometres of asphalting and road works (MEED 16:11:01).

The prospective bidders include Cyprus-based Joannou & Paraskevaides (J&P - Overseas), the local/Belgian Six Construct Abu Dhabi, Athens-based Consolidated Contractors International Company (CCC)and Bin Hafeez General Contracting & Transport Establishment, ADMAK General Contracting Company, Al-Jaber Transport & General Contracting Establishment and Al-Muhairy General Contracting Company- all local. The consultant is the US' De Leuw Cather International.

The Abu Dhabi corniche extension project is being carried out in two phases. An award is due for the second-phase contract, which includes extending the corniche by about six kilometres behind the Sheraton hotel towards Mina Zayed and the construction of three underpasses. The two-year contract also includes the construction of eight pedestrian ways, parks and related works.

Al-Muhairy has submitted the low bid of AED 590.2 million ($161 million) for the contract (MEED 4:10:02).
