Full steam ahead for Education City

On-site construction is set to begin on two of the largest packages on the Education City project, following the award of contracts totalling an estimated $150 million. A local group of Midmac Contractingand Contracohas won the estimated $75 million-80 million contract to build the bridge arts and sciences college. Mobilisation is also under way for the Cornell medical college facilities contract, which has been awarded to a 50:50 joint venture between the US' Contrack Internationaland the local Darwish Engineeringat a cost of $71 million.

The arts and sciences college contract involves the construction of a 40,000-square-metre, three-storey building. The contract is due to be completed by December 2003.

For the Cornell medical college, the contractors will be responsible for medical equipment procurement, in addition to civil and electromechanical works. Contract completion is set for late June 2003, in preparation for the medical college to receive its first students the following September.

Bidding is also under way for a third contract on the prestigious development. Covering the infrastructure works, contractors are preparing to submit bids in mid June.

Qatar Petroleumis handling the project on behalf of the client, the Qatar Foundation for Education, Science & Community Development. The project and construction manager is KEO International Consultants.
