Funeral held for Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince

24 October 2011

A new heir to the throne has not yet been appointed

The funeral of Crown Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz al-Saud was held in Riyadh on 25 October. Prince Sultan died on 22 October from colon cancer in a New York hospital.

The death of Prince Sultan, who was seen as a moderniser, has raised questions about the succession of the Saudi monarchy. He was buried in Riyadh’s Imam Turki bin Abdullah mosque. About 100 dignitaries attended the funeral. The crown prince was also minister of defence and aviation and oversaw huge expenditure on modernising the kingdom’s army.

A new heir to the throne has not yet been appointed, although it is expected to be Prince Naif, a brother of the crown prince.
