A consortium of Galfar Engineering and Larsen & Toubro will build new passenger terminal

A joint venture of local Galfar Engineering & Contracting and India’s Larsen & Toubro has won the contract to build a new passenger terminal at Oman’s Salalah airport.

The consortium had submitted a bid of OR325m ($845m). However, the lowest bidder was a joint venture of Turkey’s Alsim Alarko and India’s Nagarjuna Construction Company with a bid of OR273m. Cyprus-based Joannou & Paraskevaides bid OR353m.

The passenger terminal at Salalah will be 55,000 square metres.

In October, a consortium of US’ Bechtel, the local Bahwan Engineering and Turkey’s Enka won the deal to build the new passenger terminal at Muscat International airport (MEED 27:10:10).

A joint venture of Denmark’s Cowi and local Larsen Architects and Consulting Engineers is the consultant for both airport projects.

Oman’s Transport & Communications Ministry is the client for both the Muscat and Salalah airport projects.

The consortium is expected to begin work on the terminal by the end of the year and is scheduled to finish in early 2014. The new terminal will cover a total area of 300,000 square metres and will have a total capacity of 12 million passengers annually.

Oman is also developing a number of its domestic airports, with projects planned for Ras al-Hadd and Adam.
