Gassi Touil prices set for autumn

03 June 2003
Commercial bids for the integrated gas project at Gassi Touil will not be called until mid-August at the earliest. The date was pushed back from the initial March submission date as the client, state energy company Sonatrachin association with the Energy & Mines Ministry, is still participating in clarification meetings with the 12 groups that presented technical offers at the start of the year (MEED 7:3:03).

The scheme to develop an integrated liquefied natural gas (LNG) project for the six fields in the west of the Berkine basin has been subject to severe delays and some confusion. However, Sonatrach is confident that the clarification meetings will resolve any uncertainties, paving the way for commercial bids to be invited in the latter part of the third quarter.

The project involves the appraisal and development of the three undeveloped southern fields of Gassi Touil. The selected group will undertake responsibility for the construction of infrastructure to transport gas from these and the already developed northern fields to a liquefaction plant, which will also be constructed as part of the project. The three northern fields - Nezla South, Hassi Touareg and Toual - have gas production capacity of 12 million cubic metres a day.

The six fields have estimated total reserves of 9 trillion cubic feet, equivalent to 5.6 per cent of the country's proven gas reserves.
