GE wins Emirates back-up deal

GE Aircraft Engineshas signed a $1,000 million deal to supply seven spare GE90-115B jet engines and provide maintenance and overhaul services for the 26 new Boeing 777-300 aircraft being acquired by Dubai-based Emirates. Emirates first signed a letter of intent with The Boeing Companyof the US to acquire the extra-long-range passenger jets in 2001, and has since signed lease agreements for the aircraft with the Singapore-based International Lease Finance Corporation (ILFC)and General Electric Capital Aviation Services of the US (MEED 20:6:03).

The Boeing deal is part of a major expansion plan to double the size of the Emirates fleet.

Engine Alliance, a joint venture between GE Aircraft Engines and the US' Pratt & Whitney, was awarded in June 2002 the estimated $1,500 million contract to supply Emirates with engines for its first batch of AirbusA380s. The engines for the second batch are to be awarded under a separate contract (MEED 21:6:03).
