GE wins Ras Laffan order

GE Power Systemsof the US has been awardeda contract to supply four gas turbine generators for the Ras Laffan independent water and power project (IWPP). The 820-MW combined cycle facility, fired by natural gas, is scheduled to begin commercial operation in 2003.

GE will provide four MS9001E gas turbines and generators to Enelpowerof Italy, the main contractor on the project. The turbines have a capacity of 123 MW each. GE will also supply installation, start-up, performance testing and training services under a separate contract.

The four turbines will be manufactured at GE's facility at Belfort in France, and the generators will be built by Elin of Austria. The equipment will be shipped to the site this year. Three of the turbines are scheduled to start commercial service in March 2003 and the fourth in August next year. The terms of the contract have not been disclosed

The main shareholders in the project company, Ras Laffan Power Company, are AES Oasis, a subsidiary of the US' AES Corporation, the Qatar Electricity & Water Company, Qatar Petroleumand Kuwait-based Gulf Investment Corporation (MEED 10:5:02).
