Bahrain’s national carrier expects seven new aircraft to joint its fleet by year-end

Bahrain’s national carrier Gulf Air has received the first of five Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft it leased in November last year from Dubai-based DAE Capital.

The new aircraft will cater to the carrier’s Bahrain-London route starting on 15 June.

The rest of the remaining aircraft are expected to be delivered over course of the next few months.

In addition to the Boeing wide body aircraft from the US plane manufacturer, Gulf Air expects two Airbus A320neo to join its fleet before the year end.

MEED understands Gulf Air intends to open eight new routes in 2018 to Abha (Saudi Arabia); Alexandria (Egypt); Baku (Georgia); Bangalore (India); Calicut (India); Casablanca (Morocco); Sharm el-Shaikh (Egypt); and Tabuk (Saudi Arabia).

Gulf Air’s 787-9 Dreamliner will cater to the Bahrain to Casablanca route, the company said in a statement.

The carrier’s Dreamliner will feature 282 seats in a two-class configuration.

Gulf Air chairman Zayed Alzayani said he expects the new aircraft to allow the carrier to expand its network in a “strategic manner.”
