The masterplan is due to be completed in late October for the Pearl of the Gulf island project in West Bay. A team lead by the US' Parsons International and including US architect Callison, Australian financial consultant SGS and marketing firm Leo Burnettwas appointed in July for the project, which is being promoted by United Development Company (UDC). Once completed, the masterplan will be submitted for approval (MEED 18:4:03).

The scheme, previously known as West Bay island project, calls for the creation of a 3.2 million-square-metre island off the Ritz Carlton hotel, to be connected to the mainland by a bridge. Initial plans call for 1,500-2,000 villas to be built on the island. The project, which is notable for` the fact that it will provide the first opportunity to buy land and property in Qatar, is expected to require total investment of $2,000 million spread over five years.
