Container volumes rise 10 per cent at firm’s Sharjah terminals
Sharjah-based ports operator Gulftainer says the volume of cargo passing through its two UAE ports increased by 9.9 per cent in 2009, due to a relatively buoyant regional economy.
The company’s total throughput was 2.75 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in 2009, up from 2.5 million TEUs in 2008.
Gulftainer operates Sharjah Container Terminal and Khorfakkan Container Terminal, also in Sharjah.
While the nearby Dubai economy was hit hard by the downturn in 2009, the wider region including Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Iran have remained relatively buoyant, says a Gulftainer spokesman.
