Habtoor-Drake tie-up wins $109m contract for Dubai project

Habtoor-Drake tie-up to perform mechanical, electrical, and plumbing for Al-Habtoor City project

A joint venture of Dubai-based contractors Habtoor Leighton Specon (HLS) and Drake & Scull Engineering has been awarded a AED403m ($109.7m) contract to provide mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) works for the $1.33bn Al-Habtoor City project in Dubai.

Under the agreement, the partnership will be responsible for all MEP works for the project, located on the site of the former Metropolitan Hotel. HLS’s share of the contract is 51 per cent.

The Al-Habtoor City project will consists of three hotels: a 27-storey W hotel, a six-storey St Regis hotel, and a 37-storey Westin hotel. It also includes a 1,400-seat Las Vegas-style “aqua” theatre, three basement levels, ground and mezzanine levels and a car park for 2,290 cars. The three hotels will be managed by Starwood and will have a total of 1,623 rooms. The total built area is about 390,000 square metres.

The main contractor is the Habtoor Leighton Group. The development is scheduled for completion at the beginning of 2016.

According to HLS, the win takes the value of its awarded contracts in 2013 to more than $462m.

In June, the Habtoor-Drake joint venture won a $140m MEP contract for the National Institute of Neurosciences and the cancer and cardiac centres at King Fahad Medical City in Riyadh.
