Hamas: wall will not stop attacks

03 October 2003
The proposed extension to the Israeli 'security fence', which separates Israel from parts of the West Bank, will not stop attacks, said Palestinian militant group Hamas on 3 October. 'The wall will not protect the Zionist entity and will not stop the strikes of resistance,' said a statement from the group. 'The day will come when the wall will eventually collapse just as the Berlin Wall collapsed.' Hamas declared that the wall would 'provoke anger and fuel the spirit of resistance'.

The Israeli government agreed to extend the wall after a cabinet meeting on 1 October. The Palestinian Authority (PA) said that the wall would 'tear up the West Bank and confiscate vast [amounts of] territory, create buffer zones - and it will be impossible to establish a Palestinian political entity.' Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat on 2 October appealed to the peace roadmap Quartet, made up of the US, UN Russia and the EU, to intervene, saying that the decision to build it would end the peace process. 'This proves Israel is not serious about peace and aims at unilaterally setting borders to prevent the establishment of a viable Palestinian state,' said Palestinian Prime Minister designate Ahmed Qurei (MEED 1:10:03).
