Hashimi dies

25 September 2003
Iraqi governing council member Aquila al-Hashimi on 25 September died in hospital as a result of injuries she sustained from a gun attack. Al-Hashimi was admitted to a US hospital in the country after her car was fired at by unnamed assailants on 20 September. She died of internal bleeding caused by injuries she sustained to her stomach, leg and shoulders. In paying tribute to the former politician, Coalition Provisional Authority chief administrator Paul Bremer said: 'Today the people of Iraq have lost a champion and pioneer of freedom and democracy.'

Al-Hashimi was one of only three women on the interim governing council, and the only member to have served under Saddam Hussein's regime. Three of Hashimi's bodyguards were injured in the attack (MEED 22:9:03).
