A leading figure in Bahrain’s banking sector
Hassan Ali Juma
Position: CEO and president, Arab Banking Corporation; CEO, National Bank of Bahrain
Biography: As an independent director of Arab Banking Corporation (ABC) since 1994, and chief executive officer (CEO) of National Bank of Bahrain (NBB) since 1997, Juma has a foot in both the local retail banking market and regional investment banking.
His appointment as president and CEO of ABC in April follows the bank’s revelation that it has made provisions of $599m because of exposure to sub-prime related assets, and the retirement of former CEO Ghazi Abduljawad.
Juma now has the task of getting the bank back on course following these losses, the associated rights issue to shore up its balance sheet, and the damage to the bank’s credibility from being among the handful of regional institutions exposed to the US mortgage crisis.
Despite these issues, ABC remains one of the biggest regional players in the project finance, syndications and financial advisory markets.
