Hill taken on board for The World

The US' Hill International has been appointed project manager for the World project in Dubai. The project calls for the construction of 240 artificial islands positioned in the shape of the globe and will be located five kilometres off Jumeirah beach, between Palm Jumeirah and Port Rashid.

The project will create 60 million square feet of land, including 10 million square feet of beach property (MEED 16:5:03).

Van Oord ACZof the Netherlands is carrying out the dredging, reclamation and rock works package for the first-phase development under a Eur 200 million ($225 million)-plus contract awarded in July. Van Oord is being assisted by Ballast Ham Dredging, also of the Netherlands, on the dredging works (MEED 8:8:03).

Phase 1 will cover the construction of 30 islands. The marine works is due to be completed by 2006 and will be followed by infrastructure. The client is the local Nakheel.
