Hutchison signs for Sohar terminal

21 October 2005
Hong Kong-based Hutchison Port Holdingshas signed an agreement with Muscat and Rotterdam-based Steinwegto establish a container terminal at Sohar Industrial Port. The joint venture, which also includes local investors, will be called Oman International Container Terminal.

The first two berths at the facility are due to be completed by April 2006 and will have a depth of at least 16 metres. A further two-three berths are due to be built by 2007/08 and will have depths of at least 18 metres, capable of accommodating the next generation of containers. Further berths are planned incrementally according to requirements.

The terminal aims to handle traffic generated by the industrial port itself but is likely also to handle large volumes of cargo from elsewhere. Steinweg has been operating cargo services at the port since April 2004, including stevedoring, shore handling and warehousing.

Sohar Industrial Port Company, which operates the port and industrial area, is a 50:50 joint venture of the government and Rotterdam Municipal Port Management.
