IAEA admits mistake in Iran accusation

17 June 2004
The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on 17 June acknowledged wrongly accusing Iran of withholding information from a probe of its nuclear program but insisted Tehran still must fully explain its suspect activities.

IAEA Director General Mohamed ElBaradei acknowledged his agency had erred in not noting one of is inspectors was informed about Tehran's purchase of 150 magnets.

The issue threatened to delay action on a toughly worded resolution by Britain, France and Germany, which rebukes Iran for its lack of co-operation with an agency investigation into almost 20 years of covert nuclear activity.
