IDF enters Ramallah

01 December 2003
At least 30 Palestinians were arrested on 1 December in a large-scale incursion by the Israeli Defence Force into the West Bank town of Ramallah. The raid, which was aimed at a cell of militant Palestinian group Hamas, involved more than 60 tanks and other military vehicles, said Palestinian officials. Four Palestinians were killed during the incursion, including a nine-year old boy. The IDF demolished a four-storey building as part of the raid, claiming that militants had been hiding in it for some time.

The raid came as the US assistant secretary of state William Burns met with senior Israeli and Palestinian figures. In his first trip to the region since August, Burns said that the two sides must work towards peace, as outlined by the internationally-sponsored roadmap. Burns is also trying to get the two sides to meet face-to-face.
