Replacement of Line 1-3 Crane Rails & Power Conductors at Alba

Entrant/client: Aluminium Bahrain (Alba)

Main contractor: Rapid Rail & Comsip al-A’Ali

Architect: Rapid Rail & Wampfler

Description: As one of the country’s most important employers, Alba has created thousands of jobs for the Bahrain economy. Updating the facilities of one of the largest smelters in the world is of utmost importance to the efficiency of Alba and to generating revenue through trade with local and international aluminium markets. The recent flotation on the Bahrain Stock Exchange means that additional pressures have to be taken into account with any large project works on site.

Once a decision was made to replace the crane rail systems, an effective management process had to be implemented to ensure there was not impact on production at the facility. The involvement of a number of different stakeholders in the project meant detailed communication between the project team and the plant owners was needed to ensure that work could move between crane lines, and to create a flexible working arrangement. A well-planned safety strategy ensuring workers had a risk free and satisfactory work environment minimised disturbance to the operational efficiency of the facility.
