Iran plans renewable energy independent power projects

Developers sought for seven hydropower projects and two wind projects

Iran’s Khuzestan Water and Power Authority is seeking private developers to carry out seven run-of-river hydropower projects and two wind power projects in western Iran.

For each of the projects, the power authority has proposed a site and financial model. The proposed hydropower projects are:

  • Arriyo Barzan: 10MW hydropower project able to produce 47GWh per year at a site located 14 kilometres from Bahbahan City. The project would be expected to cost IR119.1bn ($9.7m) and the power authority is proposing an internal rate of return (IRR) of 13.6 per cent as a result.
  • Payeh-Pol: 8MW hydropower project able to produce 55.5GWh per year at a site located 25km west of Andimeshk. The project would be expected to cost IR222.0bn and the power authority is proposing an IRR of 18.2 per cent.
  • Jarreh Reservoir: 9MW hydropower project able to produce 47.78GWh per year at a site located 33km north east of Ramhormoz. The project would be expected to cost IR86.9bn and the power authority is proposing an IRR of 12.1 per cent.
  • Asak: 0.75MW hydropower project able to produce 6.75GWh per year at a site located 33km north of Hendijan City. The project would cost around IR11.488bn and offer an IRR of 17.26 per cent according to the power authority.
  • Ramsheir: 10MW hydropower project able to produce 16.97GWh per year at a site located 100km southeast of Ahvaz. The project would cost around IR59.2bn and offer an IRR of 10.7 per cent according to the power authority.
  • Shohada: 2MW hydropower project able to produce 11.71GWh per year at a site located 7km north of Bahbahan City. The project would be expected to cost IR44.5bn and the power authority is proposing an IRR of 9.9 per cent.
  • Sadat Hossieni: 7MW hydropower project able to produce 38.24GWh per year at a site located 35km south of Dehdez City. The project would cost around IR86.3bn and offer an IRR of 12.2 per cent according to the power authority.

Khuzestan Water and Power Authority has proposed the following wind projects:

  • Abadan: 60MW wind project capable of producing 134GWh per year at a site located 10km north of Abadan City. The project would cost around IR1,355bn to build and offer an IRR of 16 per cent according to the power authority.
  • Mahshahr: 60MW wind project capable of producing 152GWh a year at a site located 6km northeast of Mahshahr City. The project would cost around IR1,355bn to build and offer an IRR of 16 per cent according to the power authority.

Khuzestan Water and Power Authority would purchase all of the power from the projects under a long-term agreement with the Iranian government as guarantor of the payments.
