Maritime organisation to develop berth on Negin Island

Iran’s Ports & Maritime Organisation is to develop a new berth for Bushehr port, on an island 300 metres offshore, in the latest expansion plans for the trade hub.

The port authority says it will first carry out reclamation work on Negin Island and then build a road that will link it to Bushehr port, on Iran’s Gulf coast.

The authority has not said when it expects to tender contracts for the work.

The new berth on Negin Island will be used to import and export perishable refrigerated cargo such as food.

The authority is already planning to expand the 620-metre Kosar berth at the port, to increase the port’s overall capacity to about 7 million tonnes a year (t/y), from its current 5 million t/y. Kosar berth will be able to handle 5,000-tonne ships once the work is completed later in 2010.

Further expansion work planned for the port includes the construction of a control tower and maritime communications centre, customs buildings, the dredging of the entrance channel and extending the length of the breakwater to 850 metres.

Capacity at Bushehr’s container terminal is also being increased to 102,000 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs) a year from its current 30,000 TEUs a year, according to plans seen by MEED.

The consultant on the project is the local Darya Sazeh Consulting Engineering Company. Construction work is being carried out by the local Hamoon Construction Company.
