Iran to sign Italian gas export deal

20 December 2007
Iran is to sign a natural gas export agreement with Italy early in 2008 following talks between officials this month.

National Iranian Gas Export Company chief executive Nosratollah Seifi said the company held talks with Italian officials and the two parties would sign a memorandum soon on the export of Iranian gas to the European state.

"Iran's natural gas will be transferred to Italy through Turkey and Greece," Seifi told the official Tehran news agency, Shana.

Seifi added that Iran would soon start negotiations with Greece over the agreement.

Italy has previously said it opposes a US proposal for EU sanctions against Iran over its refusal to suspend its nuclear enrichment programme.
