First nuclear plant in Iran is at Bushehr
Iran’s first nuclear power station at Bushehr has been connected to the country’s electricity grid.
The Bushehr plant, in the south of Iran, is now supplying 60MW of its 1,000MW capacity to the national grid, according to state news.
The reactor’s generating unit began operating at a low level in May, causing concern to countries fearing the reactor could help Iran develop nuclear weapons. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) says it is “increasingly concerned” that Iran is secretly working to develop components for a nuclear weapons programme.
Tehran maintains it is for peaceful purposes only.
