Iraq incidents continue

30 September 2003
One US soldier was killed and another wounded on 29 September when the convoy in which they were travelling was attacked. A bomb was detonated and the convoy was attacked with heavy gunfire as military vehicles passed the town of Habbaniya, west of Baghdad, said a US military spokesman.

On the night of 28 September a second assassination attempt against a US-appointed Iraqi official took place. Shots were fired at Jalal Uldin al-Saghir, a well-known Shiite cleric, who is working as part of a team drafting a new constitution for the country. Al-Saghir was not injured in the incident. Aquila al-Hashimi, a member of the interim governing council, died on 25 September as a result of injuries she sustained after militants in Baghdad fired at her car on 20 September (MEED 25:9:03)).
