Iraq to consider compensating Iran

18 December 2003
The rotating head of the Iraqi interim Governing Council, Abdul Aziz al-Hakim, a member of the Supreme Council for Islamic Revolution in Iraq (SCIRI), on 17 December said that Iraqi officials would discuss compensating Iran for damages caused during the 1980-88 Iran-Iraq war. Speaking after talks with UK Foreign Secretary Jack Straw, Al-Hakim said that Iran was owed about $100,000 million in reparations for the war waged by Saddam Hussein's regime. 'According to the UN, Iran deserves reparations,' he said. 'She must be satisfied. Whether we will pay or not is something which we need to discuss further.' Both Iran and Iraq suffered huge human and financial losses during the war, during which Saddam used chemical and biological weapons.

Hakim also said that Saddam should be tried in the recently proposed Iraqi tribunal, which will be specially built to try senior Baath Party officials and former members of the former regime. 'We want any Iraqis to be tried in that court, especially Saddam and his like,' Al-Hakim told reporters. 'It is possible for the international community to take part.' (MEED 2:12:03)
