Iraqi police killed in blast

An explosion on 23 October near an oil pipeline in Qayarrah, northern Iraq, killed two members of the Iraqi Civil Defence Corps who had been working to secure the area. The explosion wounded 10 others. There have been no reports of any damage to the pipeline.

In Baghdad, local police arrested a Syrian man after finding a car packed with explosives in the Al-Doura district. The man has confessed to rigging the vehicle for an attack in the capital. A bomb was discovered nearby and was detonated in a controlled explosion. The bomb has not been linked to the detained man.

US officials announced on 22 October that on average there are about 30 attacks a day on coalition troops in Iraq.
