Workers are cleaning up after battling blaze

Iraq’s state-owned North Oil Company has extinguished the fire at its Balad-2 oil well, located between Baghdad and Tikrit, according to an industry source.

“The well fire was extinguished on 17 March,” the source said. “Workers are still cleaning up and removing the fire-fighting equipment from the site.”

The fire burned for about two weeks before it was extinguished.

It was started in late February by the accidental detonation of abandoned munitions, according to an official source.

No one was hurt in the incident.

Isis was engaged in fierce fighting in the area in mid-2015.
