Israeli army raids Gaza

23 December 2003
At least 10 people - eight Palestinians and two Israel soldiers - have been killed during raids in the Gaza Strip. In one incident on 23 December in the Rafah refugee camp on the Egyptian border, six Palestinians were shot and killed during an Israeli military incursion. Israeli soldiers entered the camp in an operation aimed at destroying 'tunnels linking the Gaza Strip with Egypt for arms smuggling'. Witnesses said that at least 40 Israeli military vehicles were involved in the raid. About 20 other Palestinians were injured during the operation and several houses were destroyed.

In a separate incident late on 22 December, two Israeli soldiers and two Palestinians were killed in a clash with Palestinian militants near the Kissufim crossing, close to the Gush Katif settlements. Islamic Jihad and the Al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades have claimed responsibility for the attack (MEED 11:12:03).
