J Ray McDermott wins Safaniya oil work

11 March 2009
Saudi Aramco has awarded a contract to the UAE-based J Ray McDermott under the state-owned oil giant's ongoing long-term agreement (LTA) with the contractor to supply it with work.

The new project will involve procurement and installation work on the south Safaniya and Berri oil fields and the Karan gas development.

McDermott, which earlier this month won an estimated $1.2bn construction contract on the Karan field, says the new work consists of the procurement, fabrication and installation of three shallow water crude oil pipelines and associated works in the south Safaniya oil field.

The firm expects the project to continue into 2010 (MEED 17:2:09).

It adds that the new pipelines will divert crude oil production from three existing platforms to other facilities before reaching the onshore Safaniya gas-oil separation plant.

McDermott says it will also work on the procurement, fabrication and installation of facilities for the Berri oil field and a supporting structure for an offshore platform in the Karan field.

In 2008, McDermott won a seven-year deal to provide engineering, procurement, construction and installation services to Aramco under the LTA deal for offshore work on the Zuluf, Safaniya, Marjan and Karan fields.
