Jordan: priority water projects

SPECIAL REPORT WATER

The Ministry of Water and Irrigation has identified the main areas where major projects could relieve Jordan's water problems as:

Municipal networks rehabilitation programme, including projects in Greater Amman, Irbid, Ramtha, Salt, Tafileh, Karak, Madaba and other locations.

Peace treaty projects. Five projects have been identified although technical and financial details have not been finalised. They include pumping stations and pipelines to lift surface water from near Wadi Al-Arab to Irbid and Deir Alla to Amman. Major storage facilities are

also to due to be built on both the Jordan river and some side wadis. The Jordanian-Israeli peace treaty also obliged both parties to clean up the Jordan River.

The Disi-Amman water supply. Feasibility studies and final design and tender documents have been completed.

Wastewater collection and treatment. This is an ongoing programme and includes a series of projects at various stages. South Amman, Baqa'a and Abu Nuseir are in the final design stages and new capacity for the Amman/Zarqa basin and Aqaba, and a long-term plan

for the Jordan valley, are under active study.

The southern Ghors (Wala, Mujib and Tannur dams) will provide water supplies for the expansion of the Arab Potash Company complex and local irrigation, as well as for municipal and tourism needs. Total cost is estimated at $139 million and the Kuwait-based Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development (AFESD) is providing a $113 million loan for the dams (MEED 21.11.97).

Regulation of the Yarmouk. A dam on the Yarmouk river at Maqarin would have a storage capacity of 224 mcm and would include major pump and pipeline facilities to convey stored water to Irbid. Estimated cost of the project is $390 million.
