The Water Authority of Jordan has signed an agreement with the South Korean government for the Export-Import Bank of Korea to provide funding for a wastewater treatment plant south of Amman.

The bank will provide $24m for the $46.4m project. South Korea’s Kolon Engineering & Construction will build the wastewater treatment plant 25 kilometres south of the Jordanian capital.

The plant will have an initial capacity of 6.8 million gallons a day of wastewater and will serve the Sahab, Khribet al-Souq, Qweismeh, Nuzha, Rajmul Shami, Dheibat, Jwaideh, Abu Alanda, Feisaleyeh and Jawa areas. The treated water will be used for irrigation.

Construction of the plant is due to begin within a month and is expected to be completed in 2010.
