Jordan to begin $1bn Red-Dead seawater scheme in 2015

29 September 2014

Project will create additional capacity of 100 million cubic metres

The Water Authority of Jordan (WAJ) expects to begin implementation of its Red-Dead Sea carrier project in 2015.

Speaking at MEED’s Mena Water Conference in Abu Dhabi on 29 September, Tawfik Habashneh, secretary general of WAJ, said that the project was still under design, but he expected to tender and implement it in 2015.

The Red-Dead Sea project is planned to guarantee Jordan’s fresh water needs until 2040 and reduce dependence on existing over-used underground water resources.

Habashneh said the project would result in an additional water capacity of 100 million cubic metres a year, and is estimated to cost between $900m and $1bn. Amman is planning to procure the project using the build-operate-transfer (BOT) model.
