July deadline for Qatar desalination scheme

10 July 2011

Qatar Electricity & Water Company and four state-owned firms have been invited to bid

Proposals are due to be submitted on 30 July to Qatar General Electricity & Water Corporation (Kahramaa) for the addition of 70-90 million gallons a day (g/d) of new desalination capacity.

Qatar Electricity & Water Company (QEWC) and the state’s four private power and desalination project companies have been invited to respond to the request for proposals (RFP).

The RFP asked companies to propose how much of the planned capacity they could add and give a unit price for the produced water. In addition to QEWC, the four companies invited are Ras Laffan Power Company, Qatar Power Company, Ras Girtas Power Company and Mesaieed Power Company.

Doha is not expected to require any new power capacity until 2015/16. As a result of its substantial capacity cushion, Qatar is now in a position to export power, although the grid will only allow up to 700MW to be despatched.
