KEO to advise on Doha wastewater treatment plant expansion

Ashghal wastewater project will add 80,000 cubic metres a day capacity to Doha South plant

Qatar’s Public Works Authority (Ashghal) has selected the local office of KEO International Consultants to advise on the expansion of the 112,000-cubic-metre-a-day (cm/d) Doha South wastewater treatment plant. The contract includes design reviews, site supervision and project management of an estimated total value of QR26.5m ($7.3m).

Ashghal is currently in the process of selecting a contractor for the project. A joint venture of India’s Larsen & Toubro, Oman’s Galfar Engineering & Contracting, and the US’ ITT offered the lowest bid (MEED 11:3:10).

In February, Ashghal received revised bids from three groups: the Larsen & Toubro-led group; a joint venture of Athens-based Consolidated Contractors Company (CCC) and France’s Veolia; and Singapore’s Keppel Seghers with the local HBK Contracting.

Ashghal’s long-term plan is to relocate the Doha South plant to Mesaieed, about 35 kilometres south of the capital. Under the relocation plan, the Doha South plant would be converted into a pumping station. Sewage would still be collected at the site, but from there it would be pumped southwest to Abu Nakhla before being transferred to Mesaieed for treatment. However, industry sources say this scenario is unlikely to happen for another 15 years.
