Biography: Khalid al-Buainain has worked for Aramco for 33 years and assumed his current role as senior vice-president, engineering, capital and operations support in October 2012.

He joined the firm after graduating with a degree in applied mechanical engineering from King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals. His early career included work as an engineer at the Ras Tanura refinery, as well as on other operational areas, including the offshore Safaniya field. In 1989, he became superintendent of oil operations at the Abqaiq producing division.

Later, he was transferred to Japan as general manager of Saudi Petroleum, a position he held until 1997. Moving back to the kingdom, Al-Buainain assumed the role of president and managing director of the Saudi Aramco Shell Refinery Company in Jubail, before being named acting Saudi Aramco Affairs’ executive director.
