Abu Dhabi Ports Company (ADPC) has issued for tender the first-phase construction package on the Khalifa Port & Industrial Zone at Taweelah.

Six international groups have been prequalified to bid by 20 May for the estimated $1,500 million contract, which entails the dredging of 40 million cubic metres of material and construction of 3.2 kilometres of quay wall. Completion is set for early 2009. The programme manager is US-based Bechtel (MEED 9:2:07).

The first phase of Khalifa port will have capacity of about 2 million containers, with an ultimate capacity of 8 million containers. The port will be built offshore and connected to the mainland by a 4.5-kilometre-long causeway.
