Kuwait delays condensate pipeline replacement

11 December 2011

Pipeline runs from north of Kuwait to Mina al-Ahmadi refinery

State-upstream operator, Kuwait Oil Company (KOC) has extended the deadline for proposals by four weeks for the replacement of a condensates pipeline to the Mina al-Ahmadi refinery.

Bids are now due to be submitted on 15 January, instead of the original 18 December deadline.

At least 20 local and international engineering firms have been prequalified to bid on the estimated $50m scheme.

KOC plans to replace the existing 16-inch condensates pipeline, which runs from a manifold at gathering centre at Mushaabat in the Birqan region (GCMB) in the north of Kuwait to the Mina al-Ahmadi refinery, 45 kilometres south of Kuwait City. The new pipeline will be 20 inches in diameter.

According to projects tracker, MEED Projects, there are 15 pipeline projects currently planned or under way in Kuwait worth almost $4bn in total.

The largest project, worth $1.8bn, was awarded to South Korea’s Hyundai Engineering & Construction and the UK’s Petrofac at the end of 2010 for the construction of pumping stations and low sulphur fuel oil and gas pipelines. The scheme will connect the Mina al-Ahmadi refinery to various power plants across the country by April 2013 (MEED 18:7:10).
