Kuwait extends submission deadline for College of Science

07 December 2010

Educational buildings will be located at the new Sabah al-Salem campus

Kuwait University has extended the submission deadline for the contract to build its College of Science and Faculty Club to 11 January 2011.

The previous submission date was 12 December. The deadline has been extended to allow contractors more time to submit bids. About 28 consortiums consisting of international and local contractors have been prequalified for the tender.

The College of Science and Faculty Club will comprise three primary elements – a men’s campus, a women’s campus, and a faculty club.

The separate male and female campuses will each comprise about six structures linked by bridges. The faculty club will be a single building located between the male and female sections, which will also be connected by bridges.

The winning contractor will be in charge of building the main buildings and a vehicular tunnel. The scope of works also includes landscaping and the provision of irrigation systems.

The project is the latest of a number of construction packages that have been tendered for the new Sabah al-Salem campus, which will be located at Shadadiyah, 20 kilometres west of Kuwait City.

In August, the university received bids from 13 consortiums for the contract to build the College of Engineering and Petroleum (Coep).

A consortium of Malaysia’s Pembinaan and the local Al-Sager General Trading & Contracting was the low bidder with a price of KD136.4m ($472.6m).

Designed by the local Gulf Consult and US-based Cambridge Seven Associates, the new facility will include eight engineering departments, as well as the university’s department of architecture.

When completed, the integrated Sabah al-Salem campus will comprise more than 25 faculty buildings. It will include a 600-bed hospital, car parks with space for more than 32,000 vehicles, dormitories, sports facilities and auditoriums (MEED 26:8:10).
